Feed Your Soil to Keep Plants Healthy

Healthy soil grows healthy plants. Feed your soil. The key to organic lawn care is to winning the competition with the weeds; you need to make the conditions for the grass so favorable that it will choke out the weeds, naturally. This may not be an easy task and can initially lead to increased cost, time and work.

Getting started:
Core aerate and add compost or other organic material to help to loosen your soil. Fertilize with an organic fertilizer 3 times per season. To promote a thick turf, mow high (3-4inches) to help shade the roots and conserve moisture. If the grass plant has higher top growth, it will naturally have more bottom growth in the roots. Leave your clippings on the lawn to add Nitrogen. Water your lawn less often, but for a longer period of time to encourage deeper roots. Weeds will have to be tolerated or hand pulled, which is not very effective.

Getting serious:
In order to effectively develop a systematic approach to organic lawn care and to naturally improve your soil, you will need to perform a soil test. Soils are dynamic ecosystems containing thousands of soil organisms that work in harmony with each other and the plants. Anything that disrupts this ecosystem can mean problems for your plants. To be successful, an organic approach requires the input of all kinds of beneficial bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms which help free bound up elements in your soil that are not available to the plant. As these organisms eat and are eaten, they release nutrients into the soil in forms the plant can use. Enhancing the beneficial microbial action will also help fight disease and insect problems, naturally.

Peters Lawn Service provides a Premium Organic Lawn Care Program that uses the highest quality organic fertilizers and liquid organic solutions to improve your soil’s microbial action. Cultural practices and common sense recommendations are also part of the plan. The 6-step plan is for those who want the very best for their lawn and the environment. If you choose this plan, we will provide spot treatment of broadleaf and grassy weeds per your request.

To effectively control broadleaf weeds, Peters Lawn Service provides a post-emergent broadleaf herbicide application. Not organic, but effective. You will receive a responsible application by an experienced, certified professional. A relatively safe herbicide certified by the USDA will be used. The same microorganisms that are feeding your soil will help to break down the herbicide.

Keep the Air Clean

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A.) and its Integrated Pest Management (I.P.M.) program takes advantage of all appropriate pest management options including, but not limited to, the judicious use of pesticides.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A.) in their April 2007 release, reports that a gasoline powered push mower emits as much hourly pollution as 11 cars and a riding mower emits as much as 34 cars. Their current and planned clean air regulations for lawn and garden equipment will continue environmental progress, keeping the air cleaner than a generation ago.
